My 2024 Crypto Portfolio
Cryptocurrencies have always been very interesting to me. I participated in ETH’s ICO in middle school and I remember telling my 8th grade English teacher to buy BTC when it was $200 or less. Anyone remember Bitconnect and Crypto Nick the YouTuber? Unfortunately I do not have diamond hands and sold most of it way before today’s modern prices. I bought a gaming PC back in 2016 for just under 200 ETH; in today’s prices, I paid right around $500,000. I was also wagering 300,000 doge per bet on an early dice sit and for my sanity’s sake, I’m not going to look up how much that is. I dabbled in DApps and even contributed to some now-defunct projects. However, life moves quickly and I had to focus my energy elsewhere. I’ve taken a long break from cryptocurrencies but I am now back albeit with a different goal.
My main goal for investing is for diversification. I’m not interested in gambling my entire wallet onto an altcoin that may 100x or lose 99% within the week. My investment portfolio consists of BTC, XMR, ETH, MATIC, SOL, LTC, DOT, XRP, and ADA.
BTC needs no introduction. It is the coin that started it all after all and the most traded coin out there. I think BTC is still a fantastic store-of-value and the high liquidity makes cashing out easy. BTC currently makes up 25% of my allocations.
XMR is my favorite coin. It is privacy focused and effective. Unfortunately it hasn’t gained much traction but it still holds value well enough. Whereas BTC is a store-of-value, I would use Monero as currency to pay for stuff. It has proven itself time and time again and I think it will be a front runner in the future of privacy coins. The XMR I keep here isn’t for spending - I have a separate hot wallet for that. I am allocating 25% of my portfolio to Monero.
ETH was probably my first “real money investment” and a damn good one at that. I scrounged up some Chinese New Year money and pocket change to participate in the ETH ICO. Back then, crypto was still young and it was difficult to acquire it. I went to CVS and bought Steam giftcards to buy CS:GO keys. I would then trade them for crypto. I initially bought into ETH’s ICO because I wanted to do DApps. It really got me into programming and cryptocurrencies. I even remembering writing about Vitalik Buterin being my hero when I was in high school. I have yet to catch up with all of ETH’s latest developments (they finally went to PoS!) but ETH is still great in my head and I am currently allocating 10% of my portfolio to ETH.
MATIC is probably my favorite “newer” coin. It offers great scalability and I was impressed with the speed and cost to send things on the Polygon network. Sending stable coins as payment over the MATIC network has been amazing and I will be supporting the network going forward. I am dedicating 10% to MATIC.
SOL is a great place for DApps and it’s quite popular with NFTs. There are lots of reasons to love and hate it but I think it will have a place in crypto going forward. I am assigning Solana to 10% of my portfolio.
LTC, DOT, XRP, and ADA are all amazing for their own reasons and I am giving each 5% to round it off.
This is my statically allocated portfolio. Whenever I add $1,000 I will allocate it accordingly. I will also be making one-time investments into other coins. However, this will not affect my main portfolio % distribution since these coins are usually gambles. Anyways… TO THE MOON! 🚀🌕
